What to know before taking tramadol?

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it or if you have any other allergies. Do not take tramadol if you have:

  • severe asthma or breathing problems such as sleep apnea, COPD
  • stomach or bowel obstruction
  • brain disorders such as a head injury, tumor, seizures
  • recently used alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, or narcotic medications
  • if you use certain antidepressants, muscle relaxants, opioids, or other medications

Avoid taking this drug if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. There are also other medicines that can affect the removal of tramadol from your body. These drugs include quinidine, azole antifungals (such as itraconazole), HIV drugs (such as ritonavir), macrolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin), rifamycins (such as rifampin), drugs used to treat seizures (such as carbamazepine), among others. Avoid taking this drug if you have used an MAO inhibitor recently. This drug may cause serotonin syndrome if you are also taking other drugs that increase serotonin.
